Performance of snow density measurement systems in snow stratigraphies

چکیده
Abstract Gravimetric and dielectric permittivity measurement systems (DMS) are applied to measure snow density, but few studies have addressed differences between the two under complex snowpack conditions. A field experiment was conducted density using in stratigraphical layers of different densities, liquid water content (LWC), hardness, shear strength, performance analyzed compared. The results showed that from DMS tended underestimate by 9% dry overestimate 3% wet snowpack, expressed as percentage mean gravimetric system (GMS). Compared with GMS, has relatively low precision accuracy similar snowpack. increased increase hardness strength measured DMSs decrease will help operators choose a more reasonable based on characteristics get reliable data optimize measurements.

Lidar measurement of snow depth: a review
Laser altimetry (lidar) is a remote-sensing technology that holds tremendous promise for mapping snow depth in snow hydrology and avalanche applications. Recently lidar has seen a dramatic widening of applications in the natural sciences, resulting in technological improvements and an increase in the availability of both airborne and ground-based sensors. Modern sensors allow mapping of vegetat...
متن کاملRemote Sensing, Model-Derived and Ground Measurements of Snow Water Equivalent and Snow Density in Alaska
Snow water equivalent (SWE) is important for investigations of annual to decadal-scale changes in A and energy-water cycles. Passive microwave satellite-based retrieval algorithm estimates of SWE now sp three decades. SWE retrievals by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Ob (AMSR-E) onboard the NASA-Aqua satellite ended at October 2011. A critical parameter in the AM gorith...
متن کاملEffect of Snow Density Irregularities on Radar Backscatter from a Layered Dry Snow Pack
The contribution of electromagnetic wave scattering on density irregularities in the volume component of radar backscatter was analyzed for a thick snow pack containing internal hoar/ice layers. To evaluate the effect of this scattering, Density Deviation Factor (DDF), a statistical parameter, was introduced into the backscattering coefficient using the “slice” approach. DDF is proportional to ...
متن کاملModeling bulk density and snow water equivalent using daily snow depth observations
Bulk density is a fundamental property of snow relating its depth and mass. Previously, two simple models of bulk density (depending on snow depth, date, and location) have been developed to convert snow depth observations to snow water equivalent (SWE) estimates. However, these models were not intended for application at the daily time step. We develop a new model of bulk density for the daily...
